panoramas

Last January, I did a book about Alexander the Great and Darius II, King of Persia. It was a children book set in the Louvre museum, which allowed to combine a fictional story and more historically accurate elements, artifacts from the past. The story was so complicated I had to find two distinct ways to illustrate it, and I came up with the idea of large oil paintings telling the story of a kid meeting the sculpted portrait of Alexander and chatting with him (true!), and watercolor vignettes which focused on documents taken from the Louvre collections, and scenes from Ancient Persia. I worked with gel and much more impasto than I usually do, to accentuate the distinction between watercolors and oil paintings.

The large oil paintings shown here were intended to run over the double-page spread, which explains why I had to cut their composition in two halves, each part telling a different thing. The Louvre from these pictures doesn't really exist ; it is a mix of several rooms, especially the large red corridors of the French paintings galleries from the XIXth century (where one can see paintings by David, Géricault, Gros...)
