orléans

Cathédrale d'Orléans / Orleans Cathedral
crayon sur papier / pencil on paper
- A4. 2008

For several weeks, I haven't been able to update this blog as much as I wished. The truth is, I've just started a new job, teaching outdoor sketch to young art students and typography to others. I also have to get things together for my wedding, which is planned in three weeks, now. So, it's been quite difficult to do everything right, and I hope to get a bit of free time in the weeks to come, to come and post comments on the other blogs, and thank everyone for their nice words.

My latest work is digital. I am working on a visual development portfolio, full of studies and sketches made with painter and photoshop. I still have a couple of oil painting on progress, but they are far from being finished, and I just can't show them here. I did these two sketches in the city of Orleans, the first using a graphite pencil and the second, oil paint tubes. They're both unfinished. The first one was more difficult than I expected because of scaffoldings near the top of the cathedral tower, which made the perspective look strange around the edges. I had to stop working on the Loire banks painting just after the block-in, because of a huge storm that came from behind. It was time to go, not to get struck by lightning, but Cécile and I still came back indoor all soaking wet.

jaune et rouge - yellow and red

Des roses / A Bunch of Roses.
huile sur toile / oil on canvas
- 4P - 2008

A bunch of roses, yellow and red, I did for the annual exhibition of the Lions Club Orléans-Midi, in June. I now think I should have painted flowers and leaves all over the canvas, to get the sensation of suffocation I wished to convey, leaving just a small amount of background to breathe. It reminds me of a story from Ancient Rome, telling how emperor Heliogabalus once smothered his guests with loads of rose petals dropped from false a ceiling. Although it might be a legend, Lawrence Alma-Tadema made one of his most famous paintings out of this usual roman cruelty episode.

gobelet - paper cup

Portrait d'un gobelet / Portrait Of A Paper Cup.
fusain et crayon sur papier / charcoal and pencil on paper
- 20x16 cm. 2008

A few weeks ago, I went to an office cafeteria, and suddenly, I saw this beautiful white paper cup in front of me. It was standing near my hands, on a white plastic table, and the light coming from a lateral window made the whole seem soft and smooth. I took the cup home and drew it. I still have to paint it, if I manage to find a good white, translucent table to put it on.

la source - the spring

Cécile, dessinant, à la source / Cécile, Drawing At The Spring.
huile sur toile / oil on canvas
- 24x18. 2008

This is a 1:1/2 hour sketch I did this summer, in a beautiful botanical garden near Orléans, in France. Cécile was painting beautiful pink flamingos (see an example here), and I decided to paint her rather than the birds. I find green tones so challenging to determine and hard to gradate, that everytime I can, I go straight to greenish pictures, or with at least a couple of green elements. When painting grass, we often do the light tones on the yellow side of the adjacent hues, and the dark ones on the blue one, and this specific balance occurs under certain weather and time conditions. Under a warm light, it is especially obvious, but when the temperature isn't that clear enough to be sure what balance use, we find ourselves disturbed by the colors of the lights and the colors of the darks. I like when the grass has been removed from the earth by past footsteps, because the green tones mingle with the brownish colors of the ground. It can be very warm or cold, depending on the quality of the earth. And when spots of grass seem flattened almost to a horizontal plane, you can see reflections of the sky over the local tones of the grass. Working alla prima is uneasy when you want to get these effects right. And the final painting is not always as convincing as you expected. Here, I was glad to get a very intense and warm spot with the shoes, so that it balanced the whole greenish hues of the scene.
