Rejected cover and preliminary sketches done for the book Alexander & Darius (published by Le Baron Perché). As the story takes place in the Louvre museum, along with Alexander himself and a boy named Darius, I tried to make a picture relevant of the unreal situation (a real boy meeting an eternal and almost-legendary hero), in which we would feel the admiration of the child and have a glimpse of the artistic side of the book (they meet in the Louvre and discuss while walking through the alleys), by using a very famous mosaic of Alexander at the battle of Issus. To get a design on straight lines, I preferred placing the elements according to this goal in composition than to true respect of reality. You can see what I mean by comparing the first sketches of horses and Alexander to the final color picture.
