This is a cover I did for a French young adults book. Let me show here the picture I did and the printed result. You can see also some w-i-p steps, such as sketches and color tests. I think the composition, brushwork, edges and drawing are completely lost on the final picture, which was essentially re-done by the publishing crew. They did put my name next to it, but I doubt I ever painted such a picture. I might be totally wrong here, but I believe my work was a bit better.

I know I'm not qualified to judge of the commercial appeal of a cover, and I'm sure the publisher and art director had their reasons, but I find the result especially unappealing. First, they asked me to paint in a way that is not really mine, with much more details than I thought in the first place. What makes me feel bitter is that I did every modification they asked for : I reworked the lights and shadows, the edges (they were really unhappy with the blur edges around the figures), the background, the detail level, I added many historical elements, etc. And, in the end, the result shows nothing but a clumsy design and sharply cut-out figures, standing like cardboard pieces in front of a very un-epic scene. The way they cut the figures out even changed the design of their faces. They look so bad!

But I guess the worst part of this mess is that they re-worked the picture with the rather small jpeg file I had sent them by e-mail, and which was cropped to the very dimensions of the book, so that nothing could be enlarged without looking ugly. Try to enlarge a google thumbnail to book dimensions and you'll get the idea. And yet, it's my name people will read next to the picture. All this for a not-so great paycheck (that's the very least I can say).

Oh wow, I don't know what to say Armel, except that I agree 100% with you.

Your illustration was perfect. Beautifully rendered, composition was amazing and the two figures looked so much in love. Just a beautiful piece.

You didn't mention this but by cropping the figures the way they did not only does it look bad composition wise with the background but they took away such an important element and clue to the whole meaning of the piece.. "the holding of the hands".

It is very symbolic and it says so much. They are in their own world no matter what is happening behind them. On the cover the reader will never guess what it is those two characters feel or want. They seem cold and maybe unknown to each other, you know what I mean?

I am really sorry they did this to you. I think that is the down side to this commercial art. In a sense those two words, commercial and art, are complete opposites and that's where the problem lies sometimes.

Your work is amazing. Keep doing what you are doing. :o)

Oups! "Emouvant". Ca m'apprendra à m'emporter!

Merci. Je me sens moins seul...

Dear Alicia,

thank you for your kind words. In all this mess, I had forgotten the holding of the hands, which was, as you said, the heart of the picture. It was exactly it : the two young lovers stand in a kind of bubble, apart from the war that takes place next to them. Now, nothing makes any sense at all.

For the last two or three years, my illustration work hasn't been much successful, and it means a lot to hear such a kind support from a fellow illustrator...
