Madonna del Granduca. Raffello - ±1505

Si un seul lieu et un seul tableau m'ont jamais donné le goût de la peinture, ce sont la Galerie Palatine de Florence, et la Madone du Grand-Duc qu'y s'y trouve. L'on a découvert qu'en dessous du fond noir dans lequel se fondent les contours de la Vierge, Raphaël avait peint un décor de fenêtre dans l'encadrement de laquelle l'on pouvait voir l'un de ces paysages comme l'on en faisait beaucoup à cette époque, mais qu'il avait fini par le couvrir de peinture afin de ne rien laisser voir d'autre que les deux personnages. C'est pour ma part cette économie de décoration, qui fait si bien ressortir les couleurs de draperies et des tons dorés de la peau, qui m'a rendu fou de cette peinture, et de peinture tout court

If only place and one painting had ever been beautiful enough to make me painting addicted once and for all, it would be the Palatina Gallery in Florence, and The Madonna del Granduca, that is exhibited there. Some studies revealed that Raphael painted a very rich background first, with a typical window on the Italian countryside behind the Virgin Mary, but eventually covered up this sophisticated arrangement with an opaque dark tone, to focus on the two figures only. This is precisely this simplicity of expression, which emphasizes the colorful fold of the cloth and the golden hue of the skin, that led me to being in love with this painting, and with painting in general.
